Cochineal: A insect mainly found in Mexico, used to extract deep red dyes.
FDA: Federal Food and Drug Administration. This group takes care of legal issues revolving whether or not a food is safe enough to release to the public. In terms of food coloring, each synthetic color must be FDA approved before being used.
g/mol: The unit of measurement meaning grams per mol. This unit is often used when identifying the weight of a molecule, compound, or element
Mauve: The french name for William Henry Perkin's original synthetic dye, represented by a flower. The original name for his dye was aniline purple.
Melting point: The temperature in which a substance melts or disintegrates at.
Natural: Of or revolving to nature. Not manmade.
Soluble: the ability to dissolve in water.
Synthetic: A product made by man through chemically combining it's components (often to mimic that of a natural substance)
